Native Plants by State and Province

A native plant is one that grows wild where you garden. The library holds 111 wild species and 20 plant groups native to North America; each page below is the cut for one state, province or territory, read from Kew's World Checklist of Vascular Plants and USDA PLANTS: the wild species first, with how many of the state's counties record each one, the garden forms of them apart, and the plant groups with their counts.

How the lists are made

Each plant's native range is read from Kew's World Checklist of Vascular Plants together with USDA PLANTS, two votes per state, with every human decision on a ledger, by the same program behind the continent-wide list. A state's page lists the species the record calls native to it and, apart from them, the garden forms (named selections, each naming its wild parent) and the plant groups whose wild species grow there. A county's absence from the record is not evidence a plant is absent, so no page says a plant is not native to your area. For your own county, the free garden planner reads a ZIP.
